DHEA Description, Use and History

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural, intermediate steroid hormone produced in our body by the adrenal glands: DHEA is called mother of hormones, or prohormone because DHEA is further converted to generate 50 other essential hormones.

Although this site is primarily geared toward selling supplements such as this, it provides a very comprehensive description of the drug, even showing its chemical formula in that nifty hexagram-based notation chemists use. Unusual too is the inclusion of a history of the discovery of DHEA. There are also links to about a dozen scientific studies on the effects of DHEA and the other hormones it affects.

As with most reports on DHEA they state that:

Improved DHEA levels have been correlated with improved sense of well being, reduce body fat and improve skin tone and moisture, increase sex drive, improve immunity, enhance memory, and increase bone density.

Need we remind everyone that correlation does not prove causality? (Recall the saying from the 70s? "100% of all heroine addicts started out on milk.")
