Caloric Restriction: The Anti-Aging Diet

Calorie restriction is the only well-researched, effective means that has been proven to retard aging in post-embryonic animals. Calorie restriction means a reduction in caloric-intake for the purposes of lowering one's rate of aging as well as preventing disease.

This is not the same as going on a diet or simply eating less. It is important that the reduction in calories is NOT accompanied by a reduction of vitamins and minerals essential to good health.

Periodic fasting has been shown to have the same effect on longevity as reducing daily caloric intake, at least in animal studies.

According to Brian Manning Delaney's website, regarding a slight restriction in caloric intake

A radical extension of life span will not be achieved by mild calorie restriction, but there is every reason to believe that significant health benefits would result ... the purported benefits of very low-fat diets may result partly, if not primarily, from the almost inevitable reduction in energy intake entailed by this way of eating.

Dr. Mercola goes on to explain why he believes that grain restriction lowers insulin levels, and promotes health and longevity.
