CoQ10 Safety

In a three month study involving 2,664 patients taking from 50 mg to 150 mg of CoQ10 daily, no major adverse side effects were reported. About 1.5% of the patients reported minor adverse effects, though the researchers considered about 1/3 of those to be unrelated to the treatment, the actual rate is probably close to one in a hundred. Of those remaining reports, epigastric discomfort (Dyspepsia), appetite suppression, nausea and diarrhea were most common. Some difficulty sleeping was reported, especially when the COQ10 was taken late at night.

Both the sleeplessness and dyspepsia might be alleviated by taking smaller dosages twice daily, or reducing the total dosage.

The benefits among elderly patients far outweighed these minor discomforts:

After three months of test treatment the proportions of patients with improvement in clinical signs and symptoms were as follows: cyanosis 78.1%, oedema 78.6%, pulmonary rales 77.8%, enlargement of liver area 49.3%, jugular reflux 71.81%, dyspnoea 52.7%, palpitations 75.4%, sweating 79.8%, subjective arrhythmia 63.4%, insomnia 62.8%, vertigo 73.1% and nocturia 53.6%. Moreover we observed a contemporary improvement of at least three symptoms in 54% of patients; this could be interpreted as an index of improved quality of life.

For those who aren't up on all the medical jargon, let's see what they are referring to here:

cyanosis = bluish skin from poor circulation

oedema = swelling, especially of feet and legs, from excess fluid build-up

pulmonary rales = rasping or wheezing breath

enlargement of liver area = self explanatory

jugular reflux = distended jugular veins

dyspnoea = difficulty breathing

palpitations = sensations of irregular and/or forceful beating of the heart

sweating = self explanatory

subjective arrhythmia = sensation of an irregular heartbeat

insomnia = sleeplessness

vertigo = dizzyness, loss of balance

nocturia = needing to urinate at night
